Making Peace With What Is

It’s been a great week! My husband came back from deployment a few days ago! Deployment homecomings are so fun that it’s almost nice that he leaves so that he can come home, almost . . .

While I was cleaning my house a few days before he came home I made an interesting decision . . .

I decided NOT to put my Great Books series of books into chronological order.

Normally when I deep clean I go through everything, throw out papers, put stuff away, and organize all the books.

This time I didn’t.

I thought about how if I organize the books my twins will just come in and push them all out of the bookshelf again, so why waste my energy reordering them?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for cleanliness and order and I actually have to do a lot of self-coaching to get my house even remotely clean, but this time I just decided to make peace with what my life is for the moment.

It’s okay that my books are out of order.

It doesn’t mean that I’m a bad housekeeper.

It doesn’t mean that I don’t value order.

It doesn’t mean that I have given up.

It does mean that I’m not going to beat myself up every time my house isn’t perfectly clean.

It does mean that I’m human, that I’m not perfect, and that is how life is meant to be.

It does mean that maybe my books are supposed to be out of order right now (because they are)!

I look at those books, not with my previous annoyance, but with feelings of joy for the way my life is right now and the wonder and beauty of what life is like raising twins.

What annoys you that you could make peace with today? The choice is yours!

  1. Inspired by previous coaching sessions as well as this article I’ve decided that evenings at our house between dinner and bedtime are allotted for fort building and obstacles courses…in my main living area…with my couch cushions, throw pillows, and moving furniture. And then we clean it up before bed! Peace is mine once more. I’m not fighting the fort building anymore. Just containing it slightly.
